How Do Glass Repair Services Fix Chipped Windshields?

by Marion Holmes

Your car's windshield protects you while you're driving. It keeps debris from getting into your car and allows you to have a clear view of the road. Auto glass is thick and sturdy. However, rocks and other road debris can chip your window upon impact, especially when you're traveling at high velocities. Luckily, an auto glass repair service can repair chipped windshields. Here are five things that will happen when you having rock chip repairs performed:

1. A repair technician will evaluate the damage.

First, a glass repair technician will evaluate the damage to your windshield. Chipped windshields can be repaired as long as the chipped area is no larger than a quarter. Larger chips will require a full windshield replacement. Chips located close to the edge of your windshield may also necessitate a windshield replacement. Your glass repair technician will ensure that your windshield is a good candidate for glass repair before proceeding.

2. Your windshield will be cleaned.

Your windshield repair technician will clean the area of your windshield that requires repairs. This process will remove dirt and pieces of broken glass that might inhibit the repair process. Oils, such as those produced by human skin, must also be removed from the windshield to ensure a successful repair.

3. Clear resin will be applied to the chipped area.

Once your windshield is clean, the repair technician will inject clear resin into the chipped area of your windshield. Your repair technician will work quickly since the clear resin will only remain liquid for a short time. The resin used in the auto glass repair process will be indistinguishable from the rest of your windshield once it has cured.

4. A vacuum seal will be used to evenly distribute the resin.

A syringe will be used to remove air from the area around the resin. The vacuum seal created during this process will force the resin into the nooks and crannies of your chipped glass. The repair technician will maintain their position until the resin cures. They may tap on your windshield to remove large air bubbles from the wet resin.

5. Air bubbles and excess resin will be removed.

Once the resin has cured, your windshield repair technician will use a razor blade to smooth out any remaining air bubbles. The razor blade can also be used to cut away excess resin that extends beyond the surface of your windshield. Overall, the repair process can be completed in just a few minutes.
